Wine Intelligence Unit: Steve Rubin

Enter WIU champion Steve Rubin of Huntington Wine and Spirits. He's got a soft spot for California wines,  late night chinese food, and single malt scotch. Spot Steve this Friday at Night of the Bubbles!

When did you first really start getting into wine?
I had a job in college (at Northeastern), working in a liquor store. That was back in 1975 when it was only sweet roses or dry French wines. Not many quality wines back in 70's... wasn't 'til the 80's that things picked up. Mondavi really put California on the map back then, we owe him a lot of credit.

What's the worst mistake you've ever made under the influence?
I drove the wrong car! I got in and started driving the wrong car home. Some guys left his keys in it, so I blame him!

What's your favorite wine pairing?
Champage with chocolate and strawberries.

In your opinion, which country rocks wine the hardest?
Besides California? I think Argentina - hottest country in terms of value and quality for price.

If you could live on only one wine for the rest of your life, it would be....
Oh, that'd definitely be a Burgundy! It's so easy to drink, so food friendly. The only wine to live with if you only have one wine.

If you were a bottle of wine, what kind of wine would you be?
Meritage - its a blend of everything, well blended, and usually the wine makers favorite!

You'll be found at this year's Wine Riot...
I'll be on the hunt for the esoteric! Anything different, anything of value under $20.
